The Marilyn Monroe Collection Travels to Italy for Feragammo Exhibit

I'm thrilled to announce that items from the Marilyn Monroe Collection will be traveling to Florence, Italy next year to be showcased in what's sure to be an exceptional exhibit, sponsored by Ferragamo.  Items from the MMC include Marilyn's personal black cocktail dress, and Marilyn's personal white fox muff. 

Salvatore Ferragamo’s newest exhibition shines the spotlight on the seductive aura and allure of Marilyn Monroe. After “Greta Garbo. The mystery of style” illustrated The divine woman’s cool elegance last year, the Florentine luxury brand will tell the story of Marilyn Monroe, another unforgettable Hollywood icon.

The exhibition on Marilyn Monroe will be held in Florence from June 2012 to January 2013 at Museo Salvatore Ferragamo, which in 1999 purchased 14 pairs of the actress’s shoes originally designed by the brand’s founder.

Through his shoes, Salvatore Ferragamo contributed to the legend Marilyn would become: they accentuated the innate and intense sensuality of the woman whom Salvatore likened to Venus, the Greek goddess of beauty.

In addition to the costumes she wore for her most celebrated roles, the exhibition will host works of art depicting Marilyn as a myth of unattainable and tormented beauty, a myth that moves us to empathy and enthralls us still today. 

Items from the Greg Schreiner Marilyn Monroe Collection and the Collection of David Gainsborough Roberts will also be highlighted.  This will be an exhibit that's not to be missed.

Unseen Eve Arnold Photos of Marilyn Monroe on Exhibit in the UK

From Saturday 14 August, Castle Galleries in Wolverhampton is thrilled to be amongst a select number of galleries in the UK to unveil an exciting and unique exhibition of previously unpublished Marilyn Monroe limited edition art, by world renowned Magnum photographer and pioneering photo-journalist Eve Arnold.

The new photographic art collection, which is published by Washington Green Fine Art Publishing, is simply entitled Marilyn and features eight limited edition giclée prints taken from photographs first captured by Eve Arnold when Marilyn Monroe was at the peak of her fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s. With numerous accolades, tributes and awards to her name, Eve Arnold was recently honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sony World Photography Awards this spring, just one day after her 98th birthday.

The sensational collection of photographs by Arnold brilliantly drew the Hollywood icon from the customary formality of the studio setting, into Arnold’s relaxed and natural signature style, capturing Monroe’s luminous beauty and her tragic vulnerability. The eight, exquisitely evocative limited edition prints portray one of the most famous women of the 20th century with six of the images capturing Monroe’s unguarded moments during the filming of The Misfits in 1960.

“By seeing her through photographs – the only way most people ever saw her – it may be possible to get some idea of how she saw herself and perhaps to glean some insight into the phenomenon that was Marilyn Monroe,” said Eve Arnold.

Through Eve Arnold’s lens, the new Marilyn collection of limited edition art gives the viewer a unique and intimate insight into the personality. It is also testament to the wonderful friendship that Monroe and Eve Arnold forged following a 1952 shoot for Esquire magazine.

During their ten year collaboration Eve Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe on six different occasions including a two month-long session while Monroe was shooting The Misfits.
“She trusted me”, Eve Arnold said. “The bond between us was photography. She liked my pictures and was canny enough to realise that they were a fresh approach for presenting her – a looser, more intimate look than the posed studio portraits she was used to in Hollywood.”
Proclaimed by Vanity Fair to be the top photographer in the world, Eve Arnold’s career spanned much of the 20th century. It was in 1954, with her intelligent choice of subject matter and a unique fresh quality that Arnold was invited to join Magnum Photos, the prestigious international co-operative of photographers as their first woman Member.

Arnold was one of the first photographers, along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, co-founder of the cooperative photography agency Magnum Photos, to steer away from the very controlled studio environment to take un-posed photographs behind the scenes, documenting everyday life. Having shot presidents, prime ministers, movie stars and the Queen; Eve admits that she had a special affinity with Marilyn Monroe, whom she met when both were relatively unknown.
“She was going places but she hadn’t arrived,” Arnold recalled. “It became a bond between us….Marilyn was very important in my career. I think I was helpful in hers too.”

Each of the eight limited editions has a worldwide edition size of just 495 making them highly collectable, and prices start from £350. 1970s Bombshell Loni Anderson Featured at Marilyn Remembered Exhibit Press Preview

The Hollywood Museum offered invited guests a preview of the exhibit entitled MARILYN REMEMBERED: AN INTIMATE LOOK AT THE LEGEND, opening on what would have been the Icon's 84th birthday on June 1st

The Star-Studded Reception Opening the Largest Exhibition Ever of Marilyn Monroe Memorabilia was hosted by Loni Anderson, who appeared wearing a Marilyn Monroe original gown purchased for her honeymoon with Joe Dimaggio and later worn to entertain thousands of service men during her famous visit to Korea.

Joining Ms. Anderson for the preview was a celebrated list of industry elite including Donzaleigh Abernathy, Gloria Allred, Alison Arngrim, Robert Conrad, EG Daily, Roland Kickinger, Kate Linder, Rose Marie, Jaime Monroy, Cathy Silvers, Kevin Sorbo, Judy Tenuta (who came in full Monroe regalia), the artist Ludvic as well as Marian Collier who worked with Marilyn on "Some Like it Hot" and Stanley Rubin who produced "River of No Return" with Monroe in 1954.

The Hollywood Museum's special exhibit "MARILYN REMEMBERED: An Intimate Look At The Legend" showcases hundreds of never before seen items representing the public and private life of Marilyn Monroe, including her 1961 Fleetwood Cadillac, costumes, personal photographs, furniture and more.

Glamorous dresses and jewelry worn by Marilyn Monroe plus her personal film scripts for "Niagara," "There's No Business Like Show Business" and "How to Marry a Millionaire" are among the more than 200 items on display in the largest exhibition of Marilyn memorabilia ever assembled -- "Marilyn Remembered: An Intimate Look at the Legend." The exhibit is open to the public from June 1 - Marilyn's 84th birthday - and continues to Aug. 31 at the Hollywood Museum in the historic Max Factor Building.

The exhibition combines the museum's Marilyn collection with the collections of Scott Fortner, Greg Schriener, Lois Banner, Bryan Johns, Jill Adams and Heidi Hanson-Hidrobo. On view will be costumes she donned in "Gentleman Prefer Blondes," "How to Marry a Millionaire," "The Prince and the Showgirl," "Let's Make Love" and "There's No Business Like Show Business."

The exhibit also showcases the full-length beaver coat given to her by third husband Arthur Miller, the evening cape she wore to the New York premiere of "East of Eden" and the green silk Pucci blouse she donned in the last photos taken of Marilyn before her death. From her death scene, the exhibit includes an empty pill bottle discovered on her bedside table.

"This exhibit offers the best chance ever to get to know Marilyn Monroe intimately," says museum president and founder Donelle Dadigan. "It includes some of her most glamorous possessions like the white fox fur muff she wore to the premiere of 'How to Marry a Millionaire,' but there's a special emphasis on displaying the personal items that reveal the real, everyday Marilyn up close. You can see the film and gossip magazines she liked to read, her makeup accessories, eye drops, telephone bill, her SAG card, and even an invoice from her psychiatrist.

"We display the furniture from her last apartment in Brentwood, including the refrigerator she painted blue when she felt quite blue herself one lonely Hollywood night," Dadigan adds.

Greg Schreiner, president of Marilyn Remembered, says, "Marilyn Monroe has been a huge part of my life and I am thrilled to be a part of this amazing exhibit at the Hollywood Museum. It will include a large part of my collection as well as several other major collectors. This promises to be the biggest and most exciting exhibit on Marilyn Monroe that the world has ever seen." On view will be several gowns created for Marilyn by Oscar-winning designer William "Billy" Travilla, original artwork by LUDVIC and photographs taken by Andre De Dienes, Milton Green, Tom Kelley and George Barris.

The Marilyn Monroe Collection will be on exhibit from June 1 - August 31, 2010. The exhibit is being hosted by the Hollywood Museum in Hollywood, California.

• Marilyn Monroe's Personal Childhood Book: A Pictorial History of The Movies
• Marilyn Monroe's Personal Script: Horns For The Devil
• Marilyn Monroe's Limousine Receipts: From Marilyn's personal files, outlining in great detail Marilyn's travels in February, May and June, 1962, including June 1, Marilyn's final birthday and also her last public appearance.

This will be the third joint exhibit with The Greg Schreiner Marilyn Monroe Collection. Together, we hope to create one of the most exciting and comprehensive Marilyn Monroe exhibits ever. With over 200 items on display, nearly all being pieces formerly owned by Marilyn herself including clothing, furs, makeup, furniture, documents from Marilyn's personal files and household goods, it will truly be a magical experience for visitors. Exhibit guests will also see several of Marilyn's film costumes, including from "The Prince & The Showgirl," "Let's Make Love," and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Also part of the exhibit: Original photographs of Marilyn taken by Andre DeDienes and George Barris, along with original artwork creations from professional artists.

Here’s a rare chance to get a close look at some of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous costumes, plus sketches by her favourite studio designers. A strapless gown from How to Marry a Millionaire, a halter gown from Let’s Make Love, a replica of the ‘subway dress’ from The Seven Year Itch, and the risqué cocktail dress from Some Like It Hot are amongst the 11 featured costumes.
