Marilyn Monroe Photo Exhibit at the Andrew Weiss Gallery, Now Through September 18, 2010

An Historic Exhibition at the Andrew Weiss Gallery, Beverly Hills...

Never before seen together, rare photos by 94 year old Bill Carroll, George Barris and Bert Stern, are exhibited now in a major photography exhibition, Becoming Marilyn, at the Andrew Weiss Gallery. The show will feature the world’s most in depth collection of Marilyn Monroe photographs, spanning her entire career from the very pictures first taken in 1945, to the very last taken in 1962.

Surprisingly, only 17 years pass in this photographic journey, but the images reveal the dramatic metamorphosis and captivating story of a young model turned Hollywood’s greatest legend. The first photos, by Bill Carroll, not seen in 65 years, and available to collectors for the first time, show a 19 year old Norma Jeane dreaming of stardom on the beach. Years later, George Barris would take her picture on the same beach, not knowing they would be her last. Both photographer’s works are featured in this show.

In addition, the exhibit will present some of Marilyn Monroe’s most popular photo shoots, Bert Stern’s Last Sitting, Tom Kelley’s Red Velvet photos, as well as vintage photos by her personal confidant and business partner Milton Greene. Other early images of Marilyn as Norma Jeane by David Conover and photos by the man known to have made Marilyn famous, the legendary photographer of the stars, Bruno Bernard of Bernard of Hollywood™ will also be on display. The exhibition opened to the public June 25, 2010 and ends September 18, 2010.

In the news:

Marilyn Monroe Named Greatest Blonde of All Time

Marilyn Monroe was today hailed as the greatest blonde of all time.

The ‘Some Like It Hot’ star’s classic wavy locks were her trademark during her heyday in the 1950s. She topped the poll despite her mysterious death in the bathroom of her home in Brentwood, LA in July 1962 at the age of just 36.

Stunning actress Grace Kelly, who died following a car crash in southern France in September 1982, took second place while French beauty Brigitte Bardot came third. American actress Cameron Diaz was the highest placed modern day star, making it into fourth place.

This Morning host Holly Willoughby was fifth. Yesterday a spokesman for Clairol nice’n easy, which carried out the study of 3,000 women, said: ”Marilyn Monroe has always been known for her iconic blonde hair.” But it’s amazing to think that even now, almost half a century after her death, she has still beaten modern blondes to the top spot. ”Her hair is synonymous with 1950s glamour but it has stood the test of time against hair styles and colours which have come and gone over the years.” Hollywood star Diaz’s platinum blonde locks first came to our attention when she starred with Jim Carrey in The Mask in 1994. Since then, she has gone on to become one of the world’s highest paid actresses. Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley was sixth while Lost in Translation actress Scarlett Johansson was seventh.

They were followed by Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks and Grease actress Olivia Newton-John. Blondie singer Debbie Harry completed the top ten. Other blonde bombshells to feature in the poll include Madonna, new mum Denise Van Outen, Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly, and socialite Paris Hilton. Researchers also revealed 67 per cent of blonde women believe their natural-looking light hair colour makes them feeling more confident. More than a third said they feel more attractive after they’ve had their hair coloured.

The study found men are also more likely to try and hit on a blonde with 44 per cent naming blonde as their favourite hair colour. But 85 per cent of guys prefer the natural-looking blonde shades to the bright platinum colour. More than 89 per cent of men also said they would prefer to have a serious relationship with a girl who had natural-looking blonde hair over one who had a bright platinum tone to her locks.

Unseen Eve Arnold Photos of Marilyn Monroe on Exhibit in the UK

Photographs ©Eve Arnold/Magnum Photos.

From Saturday 14 August, Castle Galleries in Wolverhampton is thrilled to be amongst a select number of galleries in the UK to unveil an exciting and unique exhibition of previously unpublished Marilyn Monroe limited edition art, by world renowned Magnum photographer and pioneering photo-journalist Eve Arnold.

The new photographic art collection, which is published by Washington Green Fine Art Publishing, is simply entitled Marilyn and features eight limited edition giclée prints taken from photographs first captured by Eve Arnold when Marilyn Monroe was at the peak of her fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s. With numerous accolades, tributes and awards to her name, Eve Arnold was recently honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sony World Photography Awards this spring, just one day after her 98th birthday.

The sensational collection of photographs by Arnold brilliantly drew the Hollywood icon from the customary formality of the studio setting, into Arnold’s relaxed and natural signature style, capturing Monroe’s luminous beauty and her tragic vulnerability. The eight, exquisitely evocative limited edition prints portray one of the most famous women of the 20th century with six of the images capturing Monroe’s unguarded moments during the filming of The Misfits in 1960.

“By seeing her through photographs – the only way most people ever saw her – it may be possible to get some idea of how she saw herself and perhaps to glean some insight into the phenomenon that was Marilyn Monroe,” said Eve Arnold.

Through Eve Arnold’s lens, the new Marilyn collection of limited edition art gives the viewer a unique and intimate insight into the personality. It is also testament to the wonderful friendship that Monroe and Eve Arnold forged following a 1952 shoot for Esquire magazine.

During their ten year collaboration Eve Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe on six different occasions including a two month-long session while Monroe was shooting The Misfits.
“She trusted me”, Eve Arnold said. “The bond between us was photography. She liked my pictures and was canny enough to realise that they were a fresh approach for presenting her – a looser, more intimate look than the posed studio portraits she was used to in Hollywood.”
Proclaimed by Vanity Fair to be the top photographer in the world, Eve Arnold’s career spanned much of the 20th century. It was in 1954, with her intelligent choice of subject matter and a unique fresh quality that Arnold was invited to join Magnum Photos, the prestigious international co-operative of photographers as their first woman Member.

Arnold was one of the first photographers, along with Henri Cartier-Bresson, co-founder of the cooperative photography agency Magnum Photos, to steer away from the very controlled studio environment to take un-posed photographs behind the scenes, documenting everyday life. Having shot presidents, prime ministers, movie stars and the Queen; Eve admits that she had a special affinity with Marilyn Monroe, whom she met when both were relatively unknown.
“She was going places but she hadn’t arrived,” Arnold recalled. “It became a bond between us….Marilyn was very important in my career. I think I was helpful in hers too.”

Each of the eight limited editions has a worldwide edition size of just 495 making them highly collectable, and prices start from £350. Also available is a beautiful 160 page art book which gives great insight into the career and personality of one of the world’s most beloved and infamous icons of all time. Marilyn Monroe Photos on Exhibit

Marilyn Monroe Photographs by Ed Feingersh and Gary Winogrand
August 7th – 29th, 2010
Opening Reception Saturday, August 7th , 7-10pm

drkrm/gallery/west is pleased to announce the exhibition of Marilyn Monroe photographs by Ed Feingersh and Gary Winogrand. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 7th from 7-10 pm. The exhibit will be on view through August 29th, 2010.

Probably the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe made only 30 films in her lifetime. Monroe personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with an innate sensuality, has endeared her to the global consciousness. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question, the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

New York photographer Ed Feingersh produced some of the most beautiful Marilyn Monroe shots there are. In 1955 she retreated to her exile in New York to avoid the constraints of her contract with Twentieth Century Fox and to take acting lessons with Lee Strasberg. For one whole week, Feingersh observed 29-year old Marilyn during her private and public life in New York. He followed her on her wanders through the city, joined her at costume fittings and at the Actors Studio, was along for an incognito jaunt on the subway and during her legendary ride on the pink elephant in Madison Square Garden. What he captured was the truly beautiful Marilyn Monroe oscillating between new self-confidence and extreme vulnerability, who could be relaxed and joyful one moment, contemplative, dreamy and sad the next Marilyn the person, as it were.

The famous "skirt blowing" scene from The Seven Year Itch, filmed in 1954 was to be a hit with both amateur and professional photographers. Several hundred, including Gary Winogrand, along with 2000 spectators gathered outside the Trans-Lux Theater in New York City in the early morning hours of September 15th to see and record her as she posed for over two hours for her adoring fans. Marilyn's legs featured prominently in what has surely become the most iconic Marilyn image of them all, in which she stands over a Manhattan subway grating and squeals with pleasure as her skirt billows upward.
Regular gallery hours are Friday, Saturday & Sunday 1-7 pm and by appointment
